In the past five years, The Genova Municipality has worked at reviewing and updating its ICT infrastructure to ensure full data and applications interoperability to achieve a flat architecture. Along this journey, data have been thoroughly sanitized.
Moreover, in the last two years, the Municipality has been studying and working with Generative AI models. The goal is to achieve an intelligent copilot to support administration in informed decision making based on holistic data analysis with initial focus on the improvement of city mobility and logistics.
The latter is quite important for Genova due to its orography: the city is longer than 45 km, squeezed between sea and mountains. Genova is the busiest port of Italy by cargo tonnage; it covers an area of about 1,700 acres of land, stretching for over 22 kilometers along the coastline. Effective digital logistic and mobility for both trains and trucks are key as the port does not have a wide back-office space.
Currently AI is being trained on Italian and local laws to provide an advanced chatbot to support citizens, including foreigners, as it is able to communicate in multiple languages in both written and spoken forms.
